Canine leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease with global significance.
The L. infantum species, common in southern Europe, is zoonotic, potentially causing severe disease in dogs, as well as humans.
Vaccinations against Leishmania are not very effective so additional protection is recommended - keeping your dogs in between dusk and dawn is recommended to avoid the sand-fly vector. (NOTE The sand-fly is not the same as the ones that buzz around you on the UK beaches!).
